Corbin Motors has learned of a potentially dangerous situation that exists in some Sparrows. It involves the installation and position of the brake line and its proximity to the battery terminals. In the worst case this can cause a fire under the hood and brake failure.
Why does this happen? Each time the brake is pressed the brake line fluid goes through the line and causes it to flex. Gradually, over time, this flexing can cause some of the loosely run brake lines to move next to the battery terminals. The brake lines are plastic-coated but the coating can gradually wear off and leave the metal brake line touching a battery terminal. This causes a short and the resulting electricity can cause the remaining coating on the brake line to burn off. This can result in a fire burning on the brake line plastic, damaging the brake lines and causing damage to the wiring system.
How can I prevent this from happening to my Sparrow? To ensure this situation does not occur, secure the brake cables to the firewall. Corbin Motors will send you a free, easy to install "repair" kit.
Every Sparrow owner should perform the following inspection immediately to avoid the possibility of damage to your Sparrow and potential personal injury.
1. Open up the front hood of your Sparrow.
2. Using a flashlight, locate the two silver colored brake lines located behind and on either side of the battery, positioned against the firewall. Brake lines are indicated with the red arrows in the photos below. These brake lines are not secured against the firewall.
