Social Indicators*
- The global population has quadrupled in 100 years, the fastest growth rate in history.
- The world's population is projected to cross the 7 billion mark in 2013; the 8 billion mark in 2028; the 9 billion mark in 2054. World population growth is projected to nearly stabilize at just above 10 billion after 2200.
- The world has become increasingly urban. Currently, around 46 per cent of the world population lives in urban areas; the majority of the world's population will be urban by 2006.
- The percentage of the urban population increased worldwide from 39 to 46% between 1980-1999. That means that at the end of the millennium almost every second person lived in an urban area.
- The urban population of the world increased from 1.7 billion to 2.8 billion between 1980-99.
- In High income countries it went slightly up from 580 million to 690 million.
- In Middle income countries the urban population from increased from 775 million to 1.3 billion.
- In Low and Middle income countries urbanization increased from 1.2 billion to 2.1 billion.
- In Low income countries it went from 390 to 760 million between 1980-99.
